Business Challenges

Our client faced two looming challenges – performance and compliance.
Our clients PeopleSoft performance was becoming bogged down, building over a period of a few years as upgrade activity resulted in multiple Supply Chain Management environments. Compounding the issue, as a Fortune 500 company, our client was accumulating substantial amounts of data in each environment and as a result, nightly processing was dangerously close to not finishing on time. At the same time, our client was facing compliance issues regarding Data Privacy for Personal Identifiable Information (PII) like applicant data. HR data retention had to be brought back into regulatory compliance to ensure that it met with data privacy legislation as well as address the large volume of data that was been stored.

To overcome these challenges, potential data archiving solutions were evaluated. As part of this evaluation, Princeton Softech an IBM company was engaged, whose enterprise solutions align application data management with business objectives through its leading IBM® Optim™ solution. A Princeton Softech partner, BTRG was engaged to assist with the proof of concept and implement the data archiving solution.

Client Background

Known as the materials pioneer and world leader in specialty glass and ceramics, our client is now a leading provider of optical fiber, cable products, and communications network equipment. In addition, our client creates and makes keystone components that enable high-technology systems for consumer electronics, mobile emissions control, telecommunications and life sciences and delivers solutions for a number of industries including semiconductor, aerospace, defense, astronomy and metrology.

Approach

BTRG and Princeton Softech partnered together to deliver data archiving solutions for the client's HR and Supply Chain systems. Initially, it was believed that the root cause for performance issues was high data volumes and that data archiving alone would provide an adequate solution. However, BTRG's approach was to evaluate the system as a whole. In doing so, BTRG determined that high data volumes were only part of the issue and as a result the initial data archiving solution was broadened to include database and application tuning. Through BTRG’s experience, our approach delivered superior results yielding a 60% increase in PeopleSoft performance of all PeopleSoft SCM modules without increasing the cost.

With the SCM performance issues resolved, BTRG turned its attention to the HCM modules where data retention needed to conform to new regulations. Using delivered Optim configuration, BTRG was able to accommodate the client's data challenges and unique HCM requirements which resulted in a cost effective customization.

Solution

Drawing from extensive PeopleSoft application knowledge, BTRG consultants worked closely with the client to deliver a quality solution across PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM) and PeopleSoft Supply Chain Management (SCM) modules, and implemented IBM's Optim data archiving solution utilizing BTRG's methodology to configure and optimize the software to meet unique business needs. In addition, BTRG advised the client that archiving high volume tables would effectively increase system performance and comply with industry and regulatory Data Privacy compliance for data retention. Application tuning was implemented for Supply Chain Management applications using both application modifications and database techniques such as materialized views, indexing and database reorganization.

Result

BTRG's strategic approach and technical competency in improving PeopleSoft performance and maintaining compliance with Data Privacy issues delivered tangible results. PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM) was brought back into regulatory compliance through implementing data archiving and data retention, resulting in 60% PeopleSoft performance increase in the SCM modules. After application tuning was performed and the data was archived as shown in the graph (right), overnight processing time was greatly reduced, which eliminated the risk of delayed product delivery.
