Client Background

Our client is a leading financial institution and one of the first brokerages to offer complex options order entry on the internet. Based out of Omaha, NE our client has over $2.6B in revenue and over 3,800 employees. Through subsidiaries, the firm provides a variety of brokerage services, ranging from traditional discount trading to advanced products for the more sophisticated trader. Given the wide range of services and the volume of sensitive customer financial data, our client wanted to reduce its exposure to potential identity theft with their client’s personal identifiable information (PII) as well as ensure that it was compliant with privacy legislation.

Did you know that 75% of data theft is perpetrated internally?

Do you have test environments
that meet or exceed data security
and privacy requirements?

No?

Then you need to be concerned about reducing your exposure to identity theft and ensuring you will safely pass a compliance audit.

  • Standardized, Reusable Data Masking Process
  • Ensure Data Security

  • Secure Test Data Management
  • Reduce Size of Test Environment

Test Data Management Solution

The multiple testing environments, in which you store sensitive customer information, need to meet data privacy legislation requirements. BTRG was retained by a leading online brokerage to implement our data privacy and test data management solution using IBM's Optim™ product. Having been provided with a set of 400 fields that contain personal identifiable information such as social security numbers, bank account numbers, mother's maiden name, credit card information – and more – we are implementing a data masking solution that will encrypt and store the data in such a way that it will far exceed data privacy legislation requirements.

The benefits of our data masking project have had a cascading effect. You need the same measure of data privacy protection in your testing environments as you do in your production environments. Our client maintains a set of 9 separate but integrated testing environments. We are subsetting the encrypted data so that it can be safely used for testing – without it running the risk of falling into the wrong hands.

This leads to greater testing process efficiencies. By eliminating their manual data masking process and deploying a reusable, standardized process our client has been able to reduce their data replication timeframe as well as break up their testing environment. As a result of multiple test environments our client can employ fewer groups of more focused test users. This has reduced the time required for testing and increased testing accuracy.
